Getting Started with ABDM: A Complete Guide for Clinics
Learn how your clinic can become ABDM-compliant step by step — from ABHA enrollment to health record sharing. A practical guide with timelines and checklists.
What is ABDM?
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is India's national initiative to digitise the healthcare ecosystem. As a clinic, registering under ABDM lets your patients link their health records to their ABHA ID, consent to share records across providers, and participate in India's longitudinal health history.
The 3 Milestones
- M1 — ABHA Linking: Allow patients to create or link their ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) ID at your clinic. Required for all ABDM participants.
- M2 — Health Record Sharing: Push structured FHIR records (prescriptions, lab reports, discharge summaries) to the ABDM gateway with patient consent.
- M3 — Consent Management: Allow patients to grant and revoke consent for their health records through the ABHA app or NHA-approved HIUs.
Step-by-Step Checklist
- Register your HFR (Health Facility Registry) at hfr.abdm.gov.in

- Configure your EHR to generate FHIR-compliant records for prescriptions and lab orders.
- Test end-to-end on the ABDM sandbox before going live.

Most clinics using VaidyaOne achieve M1 certification within 1 week and M2+M3 within 3 weeks. Our onboarding team provides live support throughout.
Common Questions
Is ABDM mandatory? ABDM compliance is currently voluntary but strongly encouraged by the government, especially for clinics empanelled under government schemes (PMJAY, Ayushman Bharat).
What are the penalties for non-compliance? Currently no direct penalties, but unregistered clinics may be ineligible for future government schemes and tie-ups.
