Background

What is ABDM?

Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is a Government of India initiative launched by the National Health Authority (NHA) to create a national digital health ecosystem. It creates unique health IDs for every Indian citizen, enables secure sharing of health records across providers, and forms the digital backbone for universal health coverage.

Think of ABDM as UPI for health data — just as UPI made payments interoperable across banks, ABDM makes health records interoperable across hospitals, labs, pharmacies, and insurance companies — always with patient consent.

Under ABDM, every registered healthcare facility gets an HFR ID (Health Facility Registry) and every doctor gets an HPR ID (Health Professional Registry). All records created in ABDM-compliant systems follow the international FHIR R4 standard, ensuring global interoperability.

Digital Health ID

What is an ABHA ID?

ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) is a unique 14-digit health identifier for every Indian citizen — similar to Aadhaar for health data. It acts as the passport for a patient's entire health journey across India.

  • 14-digit unique number

Issued by NHA, linked to Aadhaar or driving licence for verification

  • Lifetime health record

Every consultation, prescription, and lab test from any ABDM-certified clinic gets linked

  • Patient controls access

Records only flow to providers when the patient explicitly consents — full privacy control

  • Works across India

Walk into any ABDM-certified hospital anywhere in India and your doctor sees your full history

  • Free to create

Any Indian can create their ABHA ID for free via the ABDM app, or directly through VaidyaOne at your clinic

ABDM Milestones — M1 to M4

ABDM defines four progressive milestones. Each builds on the previous and unlocks more functionality.

M1

M1: ABHA Creation

Step 1 of 4VaidyaOne: Certified

Healthcare providers register on the ABDM platform. Patients can create their 14-digit ABHA health ID using Aadhaar or driving licence. Clinic gets an HFR (Health Facility Registry) ID.

ABHA number creationAadhaar/DL verificationHFR registrationHIP onboarding
M2

M2: Care Context Linking

Step 2 of 4VaidyaOne: Certified

Clinics link patient visits (care contexts) to their ABHA ID. Every OPD visit, prescription, and lab order becomes discoverable when the patient consents to share records at another provider.

M3

M3: Consent & Data Sharing

Step 3 of 4VaidyaOne: Certified

Patients grant explicit digital consent for health records to flow between providers. Records are encrypted with Fidelius (end-to-end) and transferred via the ABDM Health Information Exchange (HIE).

M4: NHCX — Claims Exchange

Step 4 of 4VaidyaOne: In Progress

National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX) enables digital insurance claim processing and settlement. Reduces turnaround from weeks to hours. Links with Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and private insurers.

Benefits

Why your clinic needs ABDM

5 concrete reasons to adopt ABDM today — not when the government forces you to.

01

Government mandate compliance

NHA has mandated ABDM registration for all healthcare facilities receiving government funds. Early adoption avoids future disruption as regulations tighten.

02

Patient trust and retention

Patients increasingly look for ABHA-linked providers. Displaying the ABDM certification badge builds trust and differentiates your clinic from non-compliant competitors.

03

True health data portability

Your patients can carry their records anywhere — referral hospitals, specialists, labs. Reduces repeat tests, enables better care continuity, and positions your clinic as patient-first.

04

Future-ready infrastructure

ABDM is India's healthcare backbone for the next decade. NHCX for insurance, telemedicine integration, and AI diagnostics will all run on top of ABDM. Join early.

05

Better clinical decisions

When patients arrive with ABHA-linked records from other providers, you see their full medical history instantly — previous diagnoses, allergies, medications, and lab trends.

How VaidyaOne enables ABDM compliance

Most clinics struggle with ABDM because the technical implementation is complex — FHIR bundles, Fidelius encryption, HIE-CM callbacks, consent artefacts. VaidyaOne handles all of it automatically.

You see one simple button: “Link ABHA”. We handle everything behind the scenes.
